Ringing in the New Year with fireworks is a fun way to welcome 2016! This year, when your family is lighting up the Texas sky, keep them safe by following these safety tips to avoid burns.
5 Tips To Safely Light Fireworks:
- Dress appropriately. Don’t allow sleeves to hang down where they could catch fire. Clothing that catches on fire could leave serious burns on your skin.
- Carefully follow the directions on the fireworks and never set fireworks off inside a glass bottle or other container as it could explode and cause bodily harm to those around it.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby in case a firework doesn’t light properly and needs to be extinguished.
- Choose an area outside, away from flammable materials to set off your fireworks. Make sure there aren’t any burn bans in effect for the area where you plan use fireworks.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t light a firework if you see unattended children nearby.
Watching Fireworks
- Make sure children are out of the way when adults are lighting fireworks.
- Keep pets secure and indoor on New Year’s Eve. Pets can become frightened and run away due to the bright lights and noise from fireworks.
- If you see people violating firework safety in Texas, you can report them to the Safety Violations Hotline at 1-800-452-9595.
Disposing of Fireworks
- Never try to re-ignite a firework that didn’t work the first time. Wait at least 20 minutes before soaking the dud firework in water.
- Soak fireworks in water for at least 15 minutes before bagging them up and throwing them in the trashcan.
- Do not throw away or leave unused fireworks in a paper bag.
